FASTING FOR JUSTICE
Ramadan, the month of fasting within Islam, begins today.
A time to step back and pray...
A time to work for justice....
A time of self-sacrifice....
A time to look inwards....
A time to decide what really matters...
Within the Hebrew scriptures the prophet
Isaiah speaks of the kind of fast that God
wants...'The kind of fasting I want is this:
Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke
of injustice and let the oppressed go free.'
In a diverse city how might people from all
faiths and none catch the vision of Ramadan
and of Isaiah...the fast of relationship-building
and social justice...That's the kind of fast
we need...especially as tens of thousands in
Pakistan see their lives washed away in the
flood waters....
Ramadan Mubarak.........
